## The story

Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing movie in history following a recent theatrical re-release. The 2019 Marvel epic has reached a worldwide total of $2.925 billion, narrowly surpassing James Cameron's Avatar, which sits at $2.923 billion. This marks a recurring battle for the top spot, as the two blockbusters have traded the record multiple times through various re-releases.

Disney orchestrated this reissue to build momentum for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for a December debut. The re-release itself has proven successful, generating more than $126 million globally. This resurgence comes as Marvel Studios looks to stabilize its performance following a varied period in the post-pandemic era.

The success of the franchise is significant for Disney, which now owns the rights to Avatar through its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Currently, Disney-owned properties account for seven of the ten highest-grossing films ever made. The upcoming Doomsday installment, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is expected to be a major driver for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
