## The story

In October 2001, England’s captain David Beckham delivered a memorable equaliser against Greece in a Euro‑qualifier that remains a highlight of his career. The match, held in Athens, saw Beckham run an astonishing 16 kilometres, dominating possession and orchestrating play from midfield. At the 68th minute, he curled a free‑kick that ricocheted off Teddy Sheringham’s head to level the score, only to later execute a double‑bluff free‑kick that found the back of the net after Greek keeper Antonis Nikopolidis misjudged the ball. The draw was enough for England to secure qualification, and the performance instantly revived Beckham’s reputation after a period of doubt. Over two decades later, the moment is still celebrated as one of England’s greatest individual displays, illustrating how a single match can define a player’s legacy. The 25‑year anniversary has prompted reflections on Beckham’s leadership during a turbulent era for English football.
