## The story

Katie Boulter overcame repeated weather interruptions to secure a straight-sets victory against Japanese wildcard Himeno Sakatsume at the Japan Open in Osaka. The British world number 58 required one hour and 32 minutes of playing time to seal a 6-3 6-1 win. She advanced to a second-round encounter with Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic.

The contest began on Monday but suffered multiple halts because the uncovered venue left competitors exposed to torrential rain. After trailing 2-1 during the opening games, Boulter showed her phone's weather forecast to the chair umpire before officials halted action. Play briefly restarted before another downpour struck with the Briton leading 6-3 3-1, forcing the match to spill into Tuesday morning.

Upon returning to court, Boulter dominated proceedings by winning seven of her eight service games and converting five break opportunities. The result delivers welcome momentum following early exits at tournaments in Beijing and Wuhan. Separately, Iga Swiatek pulled out of the Ningbo Open in China with a left thigh injury, putting her qualification for the season-ending WTA Finals in jeopardy.
