## The story

The Toronto Raptors secured the future of point guard Jamal Shead by signing him to a three‑year, $24‑million extension that begins in the 2027‑28 season. The deal, announced Thursday after an open scrimmage at the University of Laval, keeps Shead on the roster through 2029‑30, with the final year a team option. Shead, who was drafted 45th overall in 2024, has emerged as a culture setter, leading the league in assists for a reserve and posting a 3.96 assist‑to‑turnover ratio. Co‑captain Darko Rajakovic praised the guard’s leadership, noting his quick‑trigger passing and tenacious on‑ball defense as key to the team’s chemistry. Teammate RJ Barrett highlighted Shead’s role as the “heart and soul” of the squad, citing his off‑floor influence and willingness to host workouts at his home. While the extension confirms the Raptors’ confidence in Shead, the club acknowledges areas for improvement, including his three‑point shooting and finishing in the paint. The contract gives Toronto a stable point guard for the next three seasons, allowing the franchise to build around a player who has already contributed significantly in both playmaking and culture.
