Albania's Flamingo Revolution Wins EU Support

A movement in Albania, known as the Flamingo Revolution, gained support from the European Parliament after over 100,000 people protested in 18 days. The protests were against a law allowing development inside protected areas. The Parliament called on Albania to repeal the law and pause new construction in the Vjosa-Narta wetlands. The protected landscape is home to flamingos, sea turtles, and hundreds of bird species. The vote sends a clear message that environmental protections and the rule of law are non-negotiable for countries hoping to join the EU. Albania aims for EU membership by 2030.

Coral Reefs Found to be Resilient to Climate Change

Scientists found 166,000 square kilometers of coral reef that could survive our warming oceans, three times more than expected. The resilient reefs are in 71 countries and many were not previously recognized as climate refuges. Coral reefs support around a quarter of all marine life and have been hit hard by rising ocean temperatures and mass bleaching events.

This is the single biggest contribution any country has made so far towards the global goal of protecting 30% of the planet by 2030.

Mangroves are nature's most powerful climate and coastal defenders, reducing the impact of waves, storing up to five times more carbon than land-based forests, and providing vital habitat for fish and wildlife.

Mosquito Biofactory in Brazil Reduces Diseases

Brazil opened the world's largest mosquito biofactory in 2025. The factory breeds mosquitoes carrying a natural bacteria called Wolbachia, which reduces their ability to transmit viruses like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. This approach has been used in 15 countries and helped protect over 16 million people. The factory can produce 100 million Wolbachia-infected eggs every week.
