Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 27, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Daily Read Bytes ("we", "us", "the Service") collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible.
Information we collect
- Account information. If you sign in with Google, we receive and store your name, email address, profile picture URL, and a Google account identifier. We never see your password. To complete an account, we also ask you to provide a date of birth (to confirm you are at least 13) and a self-reported gender choice. These profile fields are private, are not shown with comments, and are not used for advertising or ad personalisation.
- Session cookie. A single HttpOnly cookie keeps you signed in. It is first-party and is not used for advertising. Advertising cookies, where they apply, are set by Google and are described under "Advertising" below.
- Activity. When you are signed in, we store the stories you save, the stories you like, your emoji reactions, and any comments you post. Saves are private to your account. Comments are public and are shown together with your name and profile picture.
- Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how the Service is used in aggregate: pages visited, approximate region, browser, and device type. In regions where Google's consent message applies, analytics storage remains off until the visitor makes a choice. That choice is communicated through Google Consent Mode and can be revisited through the "Cookie preferences" link in the footer. Google Analytics processes this data under Google's Privacy Policy.
Embedded videos
Some stories are based on public YouTube videos. On those pages we embed YouTube's own player in its privacy-enhanced mode, which sets no tracking cookies until you press play; once you play a video, YouTube may collect data under Google's Privacy Policy. Video previews in the feed load directly from YouTube's servers, which receive the standard technical details of any image request (such as your IP address). We never store or rehost videos or their thumbnails ourselves.
Advertising
Daily Read Bytes is free to read and is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google is a third-party vendor, and it and other vendors use cookies to serve ads. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are shown Google's certified consent message. Advertising storage, advertising user-data signals, personalisation, and analytics storage remain off until the visitor makes a choice. Google then uses that choice to determine whether personalised, non-personalised, or limited ads may be served. Google tags use our configured regional defaults in places where that European consent message does not apply.
You can review and control the ads you see, and opt out of personalised advertising, through Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices. For more on how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see Google's partner-sites policy.
What we do not collect
- No payment information: the Service is free.
- No precise location data of our own: any location used for ads is a coarse, general area, never a precise fix.
- We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
How we use information
We use the information above solely to operate and improve the Service: keeping you signed in, confirming account age eligibility, showing your saved stories, likes, reactions, and comments, and understanding our audience in aggregate. We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.
Where data lives
The static site is hosted on Cloudflare infrastructure. Account data, including private saved stories, is stored in the Service's secured database on our application server. Sessions expire automatically and expired sessions are purged regularly.
Your choices and rights
- You can read everything without an account. Device-only saves work without signing in; signing in also keeps saves across your devices.
- Signing out deletes your active session.
- You may request deletion of your account data (account record, profile fields, sessions, saved stories, likes, reactions, and comments) by contacting us (see below).
Children
The Service is not directed at children under 13. Accounts require confirmation that the user is at least 13.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the date above. Continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
