Specialist eclipse glasses are essential for safe viewing of a solar eclipse. Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Normal sunglasses and phone cameras are not sufficient protection. NASA advises against using binoculars or telescopes without proper eye protection.
