A huge new ocean reserve has been created in Papua New Guinea, covering an area about the size of the UK and banning all fishing inside it. The reserve partially overlaps the Bismarck Sea, a region located in the Coral Triangle, which is one of the most biodiverse places for reef ecosystems. The waters here hold more than 700 kinds of reef fish and over 300 types of hard coral.
The reserve is expected to help marine life recover and spill out into surrounding waters, where people can still make a living from fishing. This is part of a larger goal to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.
