A rapidly spreading wildfire in Summerland, British Columbia, prompted the evacuation of 12,000 residents in the early morning hours. The fire, which was detected at 5:30 p.m. local time, moved quickly, forcing residents to leave with little notice. Crews fought the fire from the ground, using air tankers to drop retardant, but winds made air operations too dangerous. The municipality remains under evacuation order.
